Maymester & Summer Sessions

Current College of Charleston students, incoming freshmen, transfer students and students enrolled at other universities may want to take a course or two during the summer. Current College of Charleston students and students with a College of Charleston login should visit The Hub for detailed information. You'll receive your Charleston credentials once you've been admitted. 

Note: The summer course schedule is posted on the Registrar’s website in the spring.

Application Procedures


Choose your student type for information on how to apply for Maymester or Summer Session.
  • Enrolled College of Charleston students

    • Registration opens in the spring. 
    • Use MyPortal to sign up for a class.  
    • Review tuition and fees for summer coursework. 
    • eBills will post to your MyPortal account. 

  • Incoming First-year & Transfer students

    If you intend to enroll at College of Charleston in the fall as either a freshman or transfer student, or you are waiting for your admission decision, you should: 

    1. Complete a summer visiting student application.
    2. After submitting the application, speak with an academic advisor.
    3. If you are an incoming student athlete, please contact Kate Tiller in Athletics (843.953.3660 or tillerk@cofc.edu) in order to be advised for summer coursework. 

  • Visiting Students (undergraduate & international)
    A visiting student is: 
    • Enrolled at a university other than the College of Charleston (either in the U.S. or outside the country) and plans to take coursework at the College during the summer only. 
    • A College of Charleston alum who has already earned their degree. 
    • A College of Charleston student who will have earned their degree prior to the start of summer sessions.
    In order to enroll, do the following: 
    1. Apply. (After we have processed your application, which takes up to 5 business days, we will send your MyPortal login credentials to the email address listed on the application. 
    2. Once you have received your MyPortal information, you will have to complete your summer financial responsibility form, which is located under the “my forms” tab of the portal. 
    3. Submit your Verification of Lawful Presence information.

    Note: If you are a U.S. citizen and have completed the FAFSA, you may skip this step. If you are a U.S. citizen but have not submitted a FAFSA form, submit your Verification of Lawful Presence online. 

    Visiting International Student

    If you are an international student who is not currently enrolled at the College of Charleston: 

  • Auditing a Class

    If you audit a class, you won’t receive a grade or credit hours. However, there will be a record of your participation on your College of Charleston transcript. 

    • To register for class, follow the same procedures and deadlines you would if you were taking a class for graded credit. 
    • Complete the Permission to Audit Request Form. Have the form signed by the course instructor on the first day of class and return it to the Office of the Registrar during the drop/add period. 
    • Payment is due upon registration. 

    Note: Tuition is the same whether you audit a class or take a course for graded credit. 

    Dual Enrolled High School Students 

    A rising high school junior or senior must: 

  • 60+ Tuition Exemption Program

    If you are 60 years old or older and are a resident of South Carolina, you can enroll in classes with the 60+ Tuition Exemption Program at the College of Charleston. You can audit courses for personal enrichment or enroll in courses for credit. NOTE: Performance-based courses must be taken for credit. 

    Apply as a summer visiting student if you've never taken coursework at the College 

    If you are a returning 60+ student and need to have your student status reactivated, please call 843.953.4831 or email summer@cofc.edu

    Registration (on a space-available basis) takes place on the day after the drop/add period for each term within the department(s) of the course(s) you wish to take. Check the academic calendar for dates. 

    Pay a $50.00 registration fee (and any applicable course fees) at the Treasurer’s Office

    You do not have to pay tuition, but you will be responsible for the costs of books and course fees where applicable.

  • Graduate Students

    If you want to enroll in graduate-level coursework during the summer, contact the Graduate School.

Tuition and Fees


Visit the Treasurer’s Office for updated tuition and fees. You will also find a complete list of additional fees. All additional fees are non-refundable after the drop/add period.
  • Payment Information

    Visiting Students

    Visiting students applying online will receive a confirmation email when they are registered. Students are not registered until they receive this confirmation email. Visiting students will have five (5) business days to pay for their course(s) after they receive their email confirmation. Students who do not submit payment for classes within the five (5) business days will be dropped for non-payment.

    Payment Methods and Options

    Online Application/Registration    

    • Credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express), e-check or savings account
    • 2.95% nonrefundable convenience fee for credit card payments paid online
    • Full payment for tuition and fees due within five business days from the confirmation e-mail sent after registration

    In Person at the Treasurer's Office - Application/Registration    

    • Credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express)
    • Credit cards swiped at the Treasurer’s Office will not be assessed the 2.95% convenience fee
    • Full payment for tuition and fees due at the time of registration
  • Tuition Refund Schedule

    Students who have registered for classes are financially responsible for paying tuition and fees according to the official tuition and fee schedule.

    For College of Charleston students, your summer session fees are due on or before the due date listed on the eBill. eBills are sent to any authorized users on the eBill system. If you register within one week of the start of classes, you should expect to pay for the class upon registration.

    For visiting students, your summer school fees are due when you register.

    Registered students who change their enrollment plans must drop courses on or before the first day of the term to avoid tuition charges and fees. Any students who do not pay their bill in a timely manner will have their registration canceled.

    After the first day of class for the term, students may withdraw from courses and qualify for a partial refund in accordance with the published tuition refund schedule.

    Registered students who fail to attend will be assessed a nonrefundable $250 fee per course for failure to officially drop/withdraw from a class. If you do not plan on taking the class, do not rely on the non-payment cancellation to withdraw your registration. Failure to properly withdraw can make you responsible for the $250 fee.
